Cristiano Ronaldo
If any United player can lay claim to being the new George Best, it’s Ronaldo, whose appetite for goals is as unquenchable as his thirst for ladies of the night. The Portuguese lothario won PFA Player of the year in 2007, yet the FIFA judges do not traditionally like Premier League club players: Manchester United have only received two nominations and both resulted in a second place for a chap going by the name Beckham. This year, Ronny has also won the PFA Young Player of the Year award, PFA Fans’ Player of the Year award, Football Writers’ Association award and the Portuguese Footballer of the Year accolade. His carefully gelled hair remains solid and impenetrable during even the most intricate of step-overs, but is this enough for him to join Luis Figo on the Portuguese winners’ list?

Lionel Messi
As an evangelical Christian, Kaka has the good lord on his side, which might explain his three goals in two legs against Manchester Utd in the Champions League last year. Hailed by Ferguson as one of the world’s two best players (alongside Ronaldo, obviously) he has the alarming appearance of a manchild. Despite this, the Brazilian has won just about every prestigious gong going this year: he was voted World’s Best Player by The Times and German magazine Kicker, while UEFA named him top forward of 2006/07 and Club Footballer of the Year. On top of that, he won the coveted Ballon D'or on Sunday, finishing streets ahead of closest rival Ronaldo in the votes.

Lionel Messi
Opponents fear him because he is fast like a tiger, although he resembles a member of dreadful Sixties pop group The Monkees more than his hero Maradonna. It is a crime, quite literally, that only one Argentinean has ever been nominated for the award (Gabriel Batistuta, 3rd, 1999). In fact, no player who plays outside of Europe has ever been nominated for FIFA’s World Player of the Year. Luckily, Messi plays for Barcelona, a club with an impeccable record in this award - eleven nominations; six wins; four second places; three third places. Shame they didn’t win anything in 2006.
